Tea and hoopla

Miscellaneous Where to Wear

Anyone who has visited New York knows it's a city that pulses with energy and opportunity, ideas and aspirations.  (Though naysayers claim that it's all moved to Brooklyn.)  For buyers like us trying to cram as much as possible into the work day that means starting early and ending late, getting too little sleep and running on adrenaline. This particular trip also required time spent trying to dodge all the hoopla and  security in place for the bigwigs in town to attend the in-session United Nations. Consider the scenario: you have a one o'clock appointment at a building conveniently...

Market weeks move fast...

Designers Miscellaneous What to Wear

Katie Brierley, designer of Isoude, observes her model wearing a perfectly-cut silk blouse and pants. Here is just one from a group of cleverly color-blocked jersey dresses by a new Dutch designer we'll introduce for spring. She said, "The light is better on the terrace", so that's where we viewed this collection of summer sweaters. Here we're shown two new print patterns at Lyn Devon's studio. Designer Sophie Theallet confers with her model who nonchalantly wears a boldly printed dress with a wonderful silhouette. We interrupted the early-morning cleaning crew to see this eco-friendly collection. Market weeks move fast and...

A Crazy Week...

Miscellaneous

I knew it would be a crazy week in New York when taxi-ing in from LaGuardia on Sunday afternoon I looked up to see an ambulance speeding along right ahead of us, lights flashing. I thought standard protocol was to slow down and get out of the way of any emergency vehicle, but my taxi driver calmly pulled out, accelerated and passed it. Welcome to the Big Apple. Instruments of Torture

Designers Miscellaneous What to Wear Where to Wear

Last weekend we took a quick trip to Nashville to see "The Golden Age of Couture: 1947-1957", a show on loan from London's Victoria and Albert Museum to the Frist Museum. There we saw some wonderful examples of the post-World War II "New Look" famously introduced by Christian Dior: voluminous skirts, padded hips, wasp-waists and pointed bosoms. This highly-engineered silhouette was giddily adopted at that time by the fashion world and the world in general. Witness your family photos from that generation or the movies of that era starring actresses from Marilyn Monroe to Doris Day. General wisdom explains...

So hot, so long.

Miscellaneous What to Wear

The season is changing and we can hardly wait. It's been so hot for so long this summer (more than 50 days above 90 degrees so far) that what was relaxation early on has now turned into lethargy. Lethargy gets boring fast; that means it's time for us all to line up some new projects, events and experiments for fall. So, ladies, come to our trunk shows in September where you can share your ideas and opinions with designers Sylvia Heisel, Holly Levy (H. Flitter) and Katie Brierley (Isoude). I promise you a conversation with a designer is more...
